Again, not for amateurs and not very much fun.Third Best book about General Jazz Theory After buying many many of them, humbly for me, if i had to choose just a few books on Jazz Theory, i would choose these:Bert Ligon - JAZZ THEORY RESOURCES, VOL. Levine's is a top-down approach to learning, by which I mean he goes through every scale, and every associated chord BEFORE you play anything other than scales and chords. The book might be very useful to the jazz theorist but it is head-spinning for the amateur seeking to learn improvisation.
Highly recommended!Not for beginners If, like me, you are a pianist seeking to learn to improvise, this is not the book for you. She loves this book and I love that she loves it. She has spent many evenings a week learning the various scales and chords, why the music differs from others, how it differs from others, how notes are played differently, and even how to create her own chords based on provided notes.

Good for any musician, better for pianists My significant other is an excellent classical pianist and has wanted to learn jazz piano for a long time.
